Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

What We're Looking For:

Iridium Communications is searching for a Mission Manager who wants to work in an exhilarating and challenging role in the space exploration industry. As the Mission Manager, you will lead one of our Mission Real Time Operations (MRTO) crews and coordinate all activities related to our satellite network. You will have the final authority in Command & Control of the Iridium Satellite Network and ensure the successful operation of our infrastructure 24/7. Additionally, you will work alongside a dynamic team driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of space technology. What You'll Do:

    Foster and develop a highly effective team of MRTO crews to manage and coordinate daily mission objectives and recovery from unplanned events
  • Mentor and develop shift personnel operational performance and career advancement through regular feedback and annual Performance Review cycles
  • Coordinate planned daily mission objective execution on the Iridium Satellite Network, including routine Satellite State of Health activities and engineering-directed test activities
  • Support recovery from unplanned events in Iridium Satellite Network by coordinating satellite payload Return-to-Service (RTS) and satellite bus anomaly resolution
  • Assist in coordinating Gateway or Teleport Network (TPN) operations, maintenance, and fault recovery activities
  • Contribute to supervision of Hosted Payload Operations Center (HPOC) operations and maintenance
  • Analyze operational processes, procedures, and tools to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Schedule personnel resources to maintain sufficient staffing for satellite command and control activities, including personnel time-off authorization
  • Monitor control facility hardware and software operations and maintenance
  • Assist in ensuring smooth functioning of the Command & Control of the Iridium Satellite Network, and any support infrastructure issues that have the potential to affect Command & Control capabilities
Experience & Education Requirements / EEO

What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field OR equivalent relevant experience in lieu of degree
  • 8+ years of experience or the equivalent work experience in a network or satellite operations environment with a minimum 5 years of experience specifically on the Iridium Satellite Network
  • Capable of being a strong motivator and source of direction for your team and role modelling commitment to your team's goals
  • Have a team-oriented mentality and be able to easily build meaningful relationships with others and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey products, deliverables, analyses, and/or issues to groups outside of your team or those who are unfamiliar with the topic
  • Be able to analyze and understand a situation or problem and think critically to make decisions and come up with new and unique solutions
  • Be self-motivated and possess a high degree of creativity, independence, and resourcefulness
  • Have a strong sense of urgency in driving projects to completion and be motivated to achieve outcomes and results
  • Can thrive in a dynamic environment and efficiently manage multiple projects for yourself and your team while making sure to meet deadlines

Things That Would be Great if You Brought to the Table:

  • Current or previous certification in the Iridium Mission Director or Iridium Mission Director Back-Up positions is desirable
  • Prior technical management experience is desirable

We'll also need you to:

  • Be on call
  • All applicants must complete the Iridium Mission Director (MD) certification
  • US Citizenship required

Work Environment:

This position works in the company office. The position is largely sedentary with the majority of the position sitting in a chair and working with a computer. The role uses basic office equipment including a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse and printer. For meetings in-person, this position will need to be able stand, walk within the office and climb stairs on occasion.
